Wow, it's been a month since we spoke, or wrote, ah, read, uh, you know. It's MARCH!!! I've got lots to tell you! We've been working on preparing our raised beds for planting and putting fresh compost on our asparagus beds in hopes to give them a little boost this spring. Our raised beds will be covered this year which should allow us to begin planting a little earlier than we normally could. We have been manuring (is that a word?) our fields this winter and doing some tilling so the soil will be ready to plant when the time is right.

The hens have been laying through the winter like there's no tomorrow. So once again the supply is outweighing the demand. Guess who wins, you! This Saturday from 9-7 all eggs will be $2.50 a dozen regardless of size. I know what's going to happen, this summer when market business increases 100 fold, the girls are going to say,"Oh, we are worn out from all that work." and stop laying eggs. I just know it!

Our new website should be hitting computers around the world in the next couple of days. If you get a moment, check it out!

Still plenty of room in the Chicken CSA. The produce CSA is sold out.

We have been welcoming overnight guests to the farm since last July through Airbnb. We believe Joan Parris, master gardener, will join us again. We are hoping we will be able to be outside for a bit for the March session. This is the month that we should be able to start planting a few things and we, hopefully, can help you get started in the right direction.

We had a nice visit with Mike, Tiffany, and daughters Scout and Harper at their Crooked Creek Farm in Pylesville today. They have started a pastured pork business and wondered if we may be interested in carrying their products in our market. We will keep you posted.

And finally...
We are looking for someone to help around the farm. Looking for: Bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, self-starter, eager-beaver, situationally aware, go-get-‘em, teachable, positive, non-complaining, grateful, rejoicing, get er done, dependable, faithful, perseverant, and take responsibility types of individuals. With an interest in organic farming, self-sufficiency, and sustainability. This is not easy work. You'll be working outside..a lot. In the hot scorching sun...a lot. Dealing with manure...a lot. Pulling weeds...a lot. Prepping fields for planting, planting, harvesting, cleaning chicken coops, learning what we're growing and how and why we grow the way we do so you'll be able to answer questions in the market. The pay stinks just like you will at the end of the day. Sound like fun? Let us know if you're interested. Any experience would be a bonus. Email or stop by the farm.

But wait, it gets even better for you few that have read this entire email. Saturday if you say the secret word which is "BINGO" your eggs are only $2 a dozen. If I'm not in the market to confirm the secret word, you'll have to honk your horn or ring our bell to get my attention and your bonus.

Locally Yours!
Steve

Hey Everyone!
Our Chicken CSA returns this year! It's a great way to get our delicious free range chicken at a savings over buying directly from our market. You can sign up for 1-4 or more chickens per month for 6 months from June-November. Chickens here are, of course, raised humanely, fed a non-medicated, vegetarian, all natural diet and allowed, or should I say forced to range free. These chickens would prefer to hang by the buffet all day. Chickens are sold as whole chickens weighing around 4 pounds. Packaged just like a grocery store chicken, but inside the package ain't no grocery store chicken. Many have told us that our chickens are the best they've ever had! Chickens will be available in our market at $4.75 per pound, much less through the CSA program.
Plan 1 One chicken per month $110
Plan 2 Two chickens per month $215
Plan 3 Three chickens per month $305
Plan 4 Four chickens per month $395
If you're interested in joining this year's chicken CSA, decide what plan will work for you, pay half down by March 1st to hold your spot and then the balance by April 1. School of Crops #2 and Date Night at the Dump

As you know I'm a big fan of the Harford County Landfill off Scarboro Road, better known as, "The Dump". I visit, at least, once a month. No, this is not another story about me jumping in a massive dumpster after an errant trash can situation. Instead, it's about an infiltration that seems to be happening there. I've noticed more and more women visiting the dump. Now we all know that the women folk can't leave man stuff alone especially if we seem to be enjoying ourselves. So I got to thinking that maybe they're checking it out for themselves just to see what it's all about. OR....could they be single ladies visiting the dump to find love. On more than one occasion, a woman with a load of trash has been seemingly struggling with the unloading process and I felt as a gentleman I should ask if she needed assistance. Some have rejected the offer, but some have excepted the help with a smile. Which prompted me to burst in the door upon my arrival back home and exclaim to Vicky, "I have a great idea! Date night at the dump!" Of course, she looked at me like I had taken in some sort of toxic fume while I was there. But think about it. Men are drawn to ladies nights at the local bars to meet women. I believe women would be drawn to the dump to meet men! I think it may already be happening on a small scale! Can you picture it? Search lights in the sky like a Hollywood opening, bars set up at the "battery and latex paint recycling" kiosks, darts and foosball by the "glass, cardboard and mixed recyclables" dumpsters. Enjoy drinks a little closer to the stars on top of the mountain of trash Scarboro has become. And, who knows what might happen at the "cushion and mattress recycling" areas after the D.J. spins a Barry White classic. Just watching the heavy equipment at the compost and mulch area alone, is enough to send a couple to the "used oil" wedding chapel! I'm nearly ready to share this idea with county exec Barry Glassman.

And now the news from down on the farm...

In order to avoid any of our attendees having a lovers quarrel, we will move School of Crops #2 from Valentines Day, Wednesday February 14 to Tuesday evening February 13 at 7. I had to agree to move it to avoid my own lovers quarrel. We are happy to welcome master gardner Joan Parris as a special guest that evening! Joan will give us her take on getting the garden plan together for the year and, of course, answer any questions you may have. We will also have a short honey bee video presentation and discuss where we should be at this point in our garden preparation. Remember, next month, (March) we can, hopefully start planting a few things! Our January meeting ran close to two hours. $15 at the door. The School of Crops is designed to help you have a successful garden this year. Whether you're starting from scratch or have attempted a garden before, we will help get you ready and be there for you as you go through the year long process of growing some of your own food. Please shoot us an email and RSVP by Monday the 12th if you plan on attending or if you have any questions.

Our 2018 produce CSA is now filled for the year! Thank you to all who have joined.

I will give you all the details on our upcoming 2018 chicken CSA in our newsletter next week. That will be starting towards the end of May.

Locally Yours!
Steve

Rousedale Farm 2018

Hi all,

Happy winter, er uh, spring, I mean winter, or summer, no winter, yeah winter. Actually the streak of real cold we had before we moved into a couple days of spring and then back to winter, was the longest streak, I’ve been told, of not getting above freezing since 1972! The chickens handle the cold temperatures much better then you would think. They insulate themselves by puffing up there feathers to allow more air in to surround them, and that air is heated by their body heat. I’d try that for my head but I have nothing on top of my head to do much with. Speaking of the chickens, with nothing planted, we allow them to range freely. Customers driving down the lane often encounter a chicken or two on the road. I’ve noticed different strategies to handle the situation. Some folks come to a complete stop until the offending bird moves. Some honk their horns. Some get out of their cars to shoo the chickens away. None of these options really work all that well. What I have found that works the best is to keep moving slowly ahead and the chicken(s) will get out of your way, even though it may look like a chicken dinner will be the end result.

Just a reminder…our first meeting for our School of Crops will be this Wednesday evening at 7 here at the farm. On January’s meeting agenda:

Site Selection
Soil Test
What to grow
Seeds or plants
Making your garden plan
What going organic means
Plus much more to discuss that will insure you a successful garden this year!
The cost is $15 per meeting or if you would like to sign up in advance for the whole year $120. Please let us know if you’re attending before Wednesday.

Our 2018 CSA is now accepting members. It's an eggtacular!!

With just a couple of weeks to go, it's time to through caution to the wind and go farm crazy. I've scrambled around and decided to cut our egg price in half!! That's right this is not a yolk,ah joke. Eggs from our chickens to you will be $2 per dozen during market hours only this Friday 10-6, Saturday 9-3 and Sunday 9-noon. No, I haven't cracked up. No, my brain is not fried. No, I haven't rolled over easy and given up. It's simply time to lay a deal on you. Credit cards, cash and chicks, ah, I mean, checks accepted.

Our Farm Market open Friday 10-6, Saturday and Sunday 9-3

Don't forget, if you ordered apples and/or cider,. your pick up is anytime the market is open this weekend (fri-sun) I brought a few extras back so we will have some to sell if you didn't place an order. We are beginning to supplement the few things we have left in the field with certified organic goodies from some of our farm friends from around the area. This not only helps us stay open a bit longer and gives you more variety in the market, but also gives us a chance to bring in some things we don't usually grow to see how they sell. If they sell well, we consider planting them next year, if they don't fahgitabouit. For instance, we have brought in some mushrooms this week. After my father and his wife Earth Mama Joyce have been telling us about their success with mushrooms, I've been thinking about our woods out back that's just sitting there begging for mushroom spores! APPLES & CIDER!!!

Once again this year we will be making a run to our friends at Oyler’s Organic Orchards in Biglersville, Pa. to bring back delicious organic apples and the best cider on the planet. We will take orders from now through midnight this Sunday and have your apples and cider back here at the farm for pick up next weekend 11/3-11/5 Friday 10-6 and Saturday and Sunday 9-3.
Apples available this year are:
Golden Supreme - A good multipurpose apple due to it’s crispness. The flavor is sweet tart.
Golden Delicious - Sweet, mellow and juicy. Less firm than Golden Supreme, but still a firm apple.
Red Delicious - Sweet but very mild flavor. Refreshing due to it’s light crispness.
Ida Red - Sweet tart apple with slightly pink flesh. Great applesauce apple.
York - A lope shaped apple that’s firm, crisp, slightly tart and juicy. Ideal for storing over the winter months.
The cider is made from just their organic blend of apples and nothing else. It is not pasteurized and has a shelf life of 2 weeks. It freezes very well. We froze a bunch last time we had it and it was delicious. This is, no joke, the best cider I have ever had!
We can do pricing that is less than most organic apples I have seen in stores. They may not be as picture perfect, but are very good. Cider will be a bit more then I’ve seen, but worth it.
Apples @ $2.72/pound Cider @ $6/half gallon and $9.50/gallon
Text, call or email your orders. 410-215-6776

Our market is open this weekend, Friday 10-6 and Sat & Sun 9-3
In the market:
Broccoli/$4/pound
Cauliflower/$1.00/pound(a little less beautiful but still a nice personality)
Green Beans/$4.25/pound (limited)
Butternut Squash/$1.99/pound
Delicata Squash/$1.99/pound
Green Acorn Squash/$1.99/pound
Eggplant/$1.99/pound
Red Beets/2 pounds for $4
Golden Beets/2 pounds for $4.25
Sweet Potatoes/ $2.29/pound
Kennebec White Potatoes/ $1.50/pound
Yukon Gold Potatoes/ $1.87/pound
French Fingerling Potatoes(red)/ $2.25/pound
Carrots/$3/pound
Red Radishes/$2.50 for as many as you want!
French Breakfast Radishes/$2.50/bunch of 8
Onions/$1.89/pound
Green Cabbage/$1.50/pound
Savoy Cabbage/ $4/head (they're big!)
Spring Salad Mix/$4/bag
Spinach/$4.50/bag
Turnip Greens/$3/bag
Arugula/$4/bag
Swiss Chard/$4/pound
Red Russian Kale/$4/pound
Curly Kale/$4/pound
Sorrel (lemony green lettuce) /$5/half pound
Yellow Bell Peppers/$2.49/pound
Green Bell Peppers/$2.49/pound
Red Bell Peppers/ $2.49/pound
Orange Bell Peppers /$2.49/pound
Hakurei Turnips (white)/$2.50/pound
Raw Honey $8/1 pound, $15/2 pounds, $22/3 pounds
Eggs/ lg/XL/$4
WE NOW HAVE DUCK EGGS AGAIN FROM DUCK GODDESS WENDY!! $7/dozen Great for baking and rich and creamy scrambled eggs. A customer last weekend asked me if they were the burial plots for some of my favorite chickens! No, I've never named the chickens, let alone Mojito, Peppermint, Lemon or Mint Julep. Delivery Menu

Here's our delivery menu for this week. One thing I have to mention is that our broccoli has had a different look this week. The heads, a yellow green and the texture, much more dense. I've tasted plenty and it tastes fine. So the investigation began. One of two things have happened, I believe. Either the broccoli and cauliflower, which were grown next to each other, got together and cross pollinated so we now have broccoflower or caulccoli. Or....someone mislabeled the broccoli transplants and I, unknowingly, planted two different varieties instead of one.
Call, text or email with your order and questions. 410-215-6776.
This week's menu:
Broccoli/$4/pound
Cauliflower/$1.50/pound(not beautiful but a nice personality)
Green Beans/$4.25/pound
Spaghetti Squash /$1.99/pound
Butternut Squash/$1.99/pound
Delicata Squash/$1.99/pound
Green Acorn Squash/$1.99/pound
Italian Eggplant/$1.99/pound
Red Beets/2 pounds for $4
Golden Beets/2 pounds for $4.25
Sweet Potatoes/ $2.29/pound
Red Potatoes/ $1.87/pound
Yukon Gold Potatoes/ $1.87/pound
Red Fingerling Potatoes/ $2.49/pound
Carrots/$3/pound
Red Radishes/$2.50/bunch (8-9 radishes)
French Breakfast Radishes/$2.50/bunch
Onions/$1.89/pound
Green Cabbage/$1.50/pound
Spring Salad Mix/$4/bag (over 1/2 pound)
Spinach/$4.50/bag
Turnip Greens/$3/bag
Arugula/$4/bag
Swiss Chard/$4/pound
Red Russian Kale/$4/pound
Curly Kale/$4/pound
Sorrel (lemony green lettuce) /$3/quarter pound
Yellow Bell Peppers/$2.49/pound
Green Bell Peppers/$2.49/pound
Red Bell Peppers/ $2.49/pound
Orange Bell Peppers /$2.49/pound
Hakurei Turnips (white)/$2.50/pound
Raw Honey $8/1 pound, $15/2 pounds, $22/3 pounds
Eggs/ small/$3 Med-Lg/$4

There's a $5 delivery fee on each order.

PLEASE TRY TO HAVE ORDERS IN BY NOON THURSDAY.

Locally Yours!

SteveRousedale Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17555031194553258365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5840161199200152664.post-7613391255182165492017-10-11T12:56:00.001-04:002017-10-11T12:56:48.364-04:00Farm Update

Delivery Anyone?

We have received a few requests to offer delivery of our honey, eggs and fresh organic produce to neighbors in our area. I’m thinking a Thursday evening delivery may work for us through the fall season. Some may be to far from the farm for this to be practical, but instead of setting a radius, try me, and we’ll see if we can make it work. There will be a $5 delivery charge for this service. Call, text or email with your order and questions. 410-215-6776.
This week's menu:
Broccoli/$4/pound
Cauliflower/$2.50/pound
Green Beans/$4.25/pound
Butternut Squash/$1.99/pound
Delicata Squash/$1.99/pound
Green Acorn Squash/$1.99/pound
Italian Eggplant/$1.99/pound
Red Beets/2 pounds for $4
Golden Beets/2 pounds for $4.25
Sweet Potatoes/ $2.29/pound
Red Potatoes/ $1.87/pound
Yukon Gold Potatoes/ $1.87/pound
Red Fingerling Potatoes/ $2.49/pound
Carrots/$3/pound
Red Radishes/$2.50/bunch (8-9 radishes)
French Breakfast Radishes/$2.50/bunch
Onions/$1.89/pound
Green Cabbage/$1.50/pound
Spring Salad Mix/$4/bag (over 1/2 pound)
Spinach/$4.50/bag
Turnip Greens/$3/bag
Arugula/$4/bag
Swiss Chard/$4/pound
Red Russian Kale/$4/pound
Curly Kale/$4/pound
Sorrel (lemony green lettuce) /$3/quarter pound
Yellow Bell Peppers/$3.99/pound
Green Bell Peppers/$2.49/pound
Red Bell Peppers/ $2.49/pound
Raw Honey $8/1 pound, $15/2 pounds, $22/3 pounds
Eggs/ small/$3 Med-Lg/$4

Locally Yours!

SteveRousedale Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17555031194553258365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5840161199200152664.post-65857724934600881002017-10-05T13:52:00.000-04:002017-10-05T13:52:11.537-04:00Farm Update

Market Open Saturday and Sunday 9-3

Summer's back!!! We were worried about our
Fall broccoli, what with all the warmer weather of late. When broccoli gets to hot during it's growth cycle, it can look beautiful and taste horrible. That's why we seldom plant spring broccoli anymore, it gets so hot so quick in the spring that the broccoli turns real bitter and weird. The good news is, we tried it this week and it tastes real good! So you will see the first cuttings this weekend in the market along with:

Red Beets
Yellow Beets
Sweet Potatoes
Green Bell Peppers
Delicata Squash
Butternut Squash
Spring Salad Mix
Arugula
Red Fingerling Potatoes
Yukon Gold Potatoes
Red Potatoes
Carrots
Radishes
Swiss Chard
Spinach
Kale
Onions
Eggs
Honey
Broccoli

See you down at the farm!

Locally yours,
SteveRousedale Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17555031194553258365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5840161199200152664.post-21584016451361306112017-09-28T17:18:00.003-04:002017-09-28T17:18:45.584-04:00Farm update

Market Open Friday 9-7 and Saturday 9-12 noon

Well, when you come down the lane to the market you may hear a sound we haven't heard in a while around these here parts....the crowing of a rooster! In an attempt to help keep hawks at bay we have been joined by pork chop and basil (pronounced Bah-sil). They've been together from the time they were chicks. Saturday their brother, Dill, will join the flock as well. I thought the girls would be freaked out, but they seem to follow the boys around and are quite friendly with them. (Wah Wah Wah) All I know is that at the beginning of the week I collected 32 eggs, today I collected 73! Lot of great items in the market tomorrow and Saturday morning:

Red Beets
Yellow Beets
Sweet Potatoes
Green Bell Peppers
Delicata Squash
Butternut Squash
Spring Salad Mix
Arugula
Red Fingerling Potatoes
Yukon Gold Potatoes
Red Potatoes
Carrots
Radishes
Swiss Chard
Spinach (limited, just coming in)
Kale
Onions
Eggs
Honey

See you down at the farm!

Locally yours,
SteveRousedale Farmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17555031194553258365noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5840161199200152664.post-6256902365879727452017-09-21T19:12:00.000-04:002017-09-21T19:12:14.495-04:00Farm Update

Market Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday!

Our market will be open Friday (tomorrow) 10-7, Saturday 9-3 and Sunday 10-3. The new layer chickens have just started laying this week, so we will have a few eggs in the market. Keep in mind these are what we call starter eggs. They are small to medium in size as the girls work their way up to their normal jumbos in a couple of weeks. I've been looking for a couple of roosters to join the girls primarily to help with the air assault from the hawks. Two roosters and 100 hens. If there is life after death I would love to come back as a uh um, well anyway, in the market:
