Down on the Farm

Where are the Eggs?

If you have been wondering why the eggs stock has been diminishing, we have been selling our chickens off to other families.  Many folks have inquired about purchasing some of our layers for their family flocks and we have obliged.  Why? We are getting ready for our next big thing!  We will let you know what the next big thing is soon.  For now, our "eggs for sale" sign is coming down. Honey will still be available.

Vicky and I want to thank you for your patronage this year and thank you for supporting the small, local farms in our area.  Have a wonderful Holiday season!

Closed For The Season Rap!

Please add your best beat...

Vic and I lookin and the field not cookin trying to make some decisions
The bugs are a jumpin', the bugs are eruptin', all the bugs causin’ nasty incisions

Farm Update

Market open Friday 12-7 and Saturday 9-4

2016 will go down as the year of the bug, at least here.  I have never seen so many bugs in my life on this little farm!  I was mowing, with the push mower, between rows of beans yesterday and was flushing out a cloud of things.    It's amazing.  Of course, some of the bugs are helpful bugs and some are not and thats one of the problems with non-organic growing.  When you spray with an insecticide you're killing everything, the good and the bad.  Being organic growers we have to grin and bare.  Unfortunately when we grin, this year, we have bugs in our teeth.   The good news is finally, finally, we have picked the first batch of tomatoes!! In the market this Friday and Saturday:

Tomatoes (heirloom and hybrid)
Sweet Corn
Egg plant
Sweet Onions (red and yellow)
Red Potatoes
White Potatoes
Lettuce
Asian Cucumbers
Beets (red and golden)
Zucchini
Yellow Squash
Zephyr Summer Squash (green & yellow)
Cabbage ($2 per head, WHAT!!)
Swiss Chard
Turnips
Eggs
Honey

Yoga on the farm returns this Saturday morning at 9.

Farm Update

Market open Friday 12-7 and Saturday 9-4

Once again, we find our chickens popping out eggs at an alarming clip.  Even a fox attack and extremely hot weather isn't slowing them down. It's a good thing for our customers because it allows us to advertise an egg special for Friday and Saturday while the market is open for full serve.  However.....you must say the secret word to get your egg deal.  Simply by coming into the market tomorrow or Saturday and saying the word 'WATTLE" you will save $1.50 per dozen. Just so know the wattle are those red things on a chicken that hang below their beak.  In this hot weather they help the chicken stay cooler.  By saying the word "wattle" you will only pay $3.50 per dozen on our home grown eggs.   In the market this Friday and Saturday:

Sweet Corn
Egg plant
Sweet Onions (red and yellow)
Red Potatoes
White Potatoes
Lettuce
Cucumbers
Beets
Carrots
Zucchini
Yellow Squash
Zephyr Summer Squash (green & yellow)
Cabbage ($2 per head, WHAT!!)
Swiss Chard
Curly Kale
Turnips
Mint (many varieties)
Eggs-$3.50 per dozen with the secret word)
Honey
Zivot Probiotic Drinks

There will be no yoga on the farm this Saturday, but yoga class will resume the following Saturday 8/6

Farm Update

Market open Friday 12-7 and Saturday 9-4

The hot summer weather is upon us and so are the bugs. I don't think I have ever seen so many bugs in the fields as I have seen this year.  Could it be from the extremely wet spring?  Could it be that our organic produce is so tasty the bugs just can't help themselves?   Whatever it is, summer squash, cucumber and bean plants are taking a beating.  That's the bad news.  The good news is that we have a lot of great produce in the market Friday and Saturday and the tomatoes are another week closer to ripening.   In the market this Friday and Saturday:

Sweet Corn
Green Beans
Sweet Onions (red and yellow)
Red Potatoes
White Potatoes
Lettuce
Cucumbers
Beets
Carrots
Zucchini
Yellow Squash
Zephyr Summer Squash (green & yellow)
Cabbage ($1 per head, WHAT!!)
Swiss Chard
Curly Kale
Turnips
Mint (many varieties)
Eggs
Honey
Zivot Probiotic Drinks

Yoga Saturday morning at 9.  Just show up and have a beautiful relaxing morning.  $10 at the screen door.

Farm Update

Market open Friday 12-7 and Saturday 9-4

Our laying chickens have been going along doing just fine for the last couple of years.  Keeping up with egg demand for the most part.  Sure, there were some down times when we would run out of eggs and I would have to visit the coops and deliver my "let's get going" speech.  All in all they have done pretty well.  Then came the new girls!  The new girls took a while to get started, but now are laying eggs like there's no tomorrow.  We are swimming in eggs all of a sudden! The economic laws of supply and demand must take hold. That's why we are having an egg sale this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  We are dropping our egg price from $5 a dozen to $3.50 a dozen.  Stock up now for the summer ahead!  Our eggs are, of course, so fresh they will keep until you eat them. Don't miss this once in a lifetime sale, unless they keep laying like banshees.

Our market will be open this Friday and Saturday with all fresh, all organic produce including:

Zucchini
Blueberries
Yellow Squash
Cabbage
Beets
Carrots
Arugula
Spinach
Swiss Chard
Lettuce/Salad Mix
Kale
Spring Onions
Turnips
Eggs @ $3.50/dozen

Farm Update

Market open Friday 12-7 and Saturday 9-4

We find ourselves at the in between seasons stage. The cool weather crops are waning and the summer goodies aren't quite there yet.  We think the summer squash may be a week away.  Beets a week to 10 days.  Cucumbers 2 weeks maybe?  As always so much depends on what the weather does.  Looks like we should have arugula and spinach back for next week.  Our varieties of Kale will be half price this week at $2 a pound.  That's one of our plastic produce bags pretty much stuffed.

Our market will be open this Friday and Saturday with all fresh, all organic produce including:

Swiss Chard
Lettuce/Salad Mix
Kale (1/2 price)
Spring Onions
Turnips (purple top and Japanese white)
Eggs
Raw Honey

Farm Update

Market open Friday 12-7 and Saturday 9-4

The weather sure feels great the last couple of days!  Even though the summer produce was two weeks late getting in, it's got a nice start with sunny days and a shot of rain on a regular basis. We would guess that the first zucchini and yellow squash may be 2 weeks away!  Also the blueberries are beginning to get a blue cast to them, so maybe 10 days to 2 weeks until the u-pick season begins.

Our market will be open this Friday and Saturday with all fresh, all organic produce including:

Swiss Chard
Lettuce/Salad Mix
Spinach
Kale
Spring Onions
Turnips
Baby Beets

Sorrel (lemony green)
Mint (Variety)
Eggs
Raw Honey

Farm Update

Down on the Farm

Howdy,

As we begin the produce season, we would like to share the farm plan for this year. Steve will return to the Baltimore Airwaves with the new Rouse and Company morning radio show May 16 on Q1370AM, 99.9FM and online at Q1370.com.  So, we are cutting back some on our planting this season.  Vicky is assuring everyone that with her spending more time at the helm, things will be run better than ever!

We have a number of restaurants that we will continue to supply this year.  Our market, here on the farm, will depend on what we have to harvest and how much the chefs purchase each week.  If the chefs buy everything we have available during the week, our market will not be open.  If they don't, then our farm market will be open Saturday from 9-4.  We will send you an email each week by Thursday evening, letting you know whether the market will be open that week and if it is, what's available.

The market will continue to be open 10-6 seven days a week for self serve eggs and honey.  We also have asparagus available on the weekends now while it lasts.

Razz Yoga will be, once again, offering outdoor on the farm yoga classes every Saturday morning at 9 beginning May 28.   You can sign up by going to Razzyoga.com.

If anyone knows a sun dance feel free to perform.

Legs, Livers and Hearts!

Hey Everyone!  Feels like spring!  More importantly, whatever they put on the field next door smells like .....spring?  Wow, it's bad!

Hope you all had a decent past few months since the last time we chatted.  We have gone through our chicken freezer and have sorted out a few items that we have an abundance of.  So this Saturday from 9-4 our market will be open for "Legs, Livers and Hearts!"  We have an excess supply of chicken legs, chicken livers and chicken hearts that we will be selling for half price.  The drumsticks are priced at $1.25 a pound and the hearts and livers at $1.50 per pound.  It's a good time to stock up!

In other news......due to me taking another job weekday mornings we will be scaling the farm back a bit this year.  We will not be offering the produce or the chicken CSA programs this year. However, we will still have our produce market open here at the farm.  Our plan is to have the market open for produce Saturdays from 9-4 this summer.  We will keep you posted on when items become available as we have in the past.

Eggs and honey continue to be self serve at the farm everyday 10-6
See you Saturday!
