Farm Update

Our Farm Market open Friday 10-6, Saturday and Sunday 9-3

Don't forget, if you ordered apples and/or cider,. your pick up is anytime the market is open this weekend (fri-sun)  I brought a few extras back so we will have some to sell if you didn't place an order.  We are beginning to supplement the few things we have left in the field with certified organic goodies from some of our farm friends from around the area.  This not only helps us stay open a bit longer and gives you more variety in the market, but also gives us a chance to bring in some things we don't usually grow to see how they sell.  If they sell well, we consider planting them next year, if they don't fahgitabouit.  For instance, we have brought in some mushrooms this week.  After my father and his wife Earth Mama Joyce have been telling us about their success with mushrooms, I've been thinking about our woods out back that's just sitting there begging for mushroom spores!    In the market:

Apples and Cider

APPLES & CIDER!!!

Once again this year we will be making a run to our friends at Oyler’s Organic Orchards in Biglersville, Pa. to bring back delicious organic apples and the best cider on the planet.  We will take orders from now through midnight this Sunday and have your apples and cider back here at the farm for pick up next weekend 11/3-11/5  Friday 10-6 and Saturday and Sunday 9-3.
Apples available this year are:
Golden Supreme - A good multipurpose apple due to it’s crispness.  The flavor is sweet tart.
Golden Delicious - Sweet, mellow and juicy.  Less firm than Golden Supreme, but still a firm apple.
Red Delicious - Sweet but very mild flavor.  Refreshing due to it’s light crispness.
Ida Red - Sweet tart apple with slightly pink flesh.  Great applesauce apple.
York - A lope shaped apple that’s firm, crisp, slightly tart and juicy.  Ideal for storing over the winter months.
The cider is made from just their organic blend of apples and nothing else.  It is not pasteurized and has a shelf life of 2 weeks.  It freezes very well.  We froze a bunch last time we had it and it was delicious.  This is, no joke, the best cider I have ever had!
We can do pricing that is less than most organic apples I have seen in stores.  They may not be as picture perfect, but are very good.  Cider will be a bit more then I’ve seen, but worth it.
Apples @ $2.72/pound  Cider @ $6/half gallon and $9.50/gallon

Farm Update

Market Open Friday 10-6, Saturday and Sunday 9-3

As you drive down our lane to get to the market, maybe you have noticed some signs that appear to be kind of cockeyed crosses.  They are stakes that have the type of mint, they're hammered in, written on them.  They, apparently to some, appear to be graves.  A customer last weekend asked me if they were the burial plots for some of my favorite chickens! No, I've never named the chickens, let alone Mojito, Peppermint, Lemon or Mint Julep.  I'm trying to come up with a better way to remember what type of mint I have planted and where.
In the market this weekend:
Broccoli/$4/pound

Farm Update

Delivery Menu

Here's our delivery menu for this week.  One thing I have to mention is that our broccoli has had a different look this week.  The heads, a yellow green and the texture, much more dense. I've tasted plenty and it tastes fine.  So the investigation began.  One of two things have happened, I believe.  Either the broccoli and cauliflower, which were grown next to each other, got together and cross pollinated so we now have broccoflower or caulccoli. Or....someone mislabeled the broccoli transplants and I, unknowingly, planted two different varieties instead of one.

Delivery Anyone?

We have received a few requests to offer delivery of our honey, eggs and fresh organic produce to neighbors in our area. I’m thinking a Thursday evening delivery may work for us through the fall season.  Some may be to far from the farm for this to be practical, but instead of setting a radius, try me, and we’ll see if we can make it work.  There will be a $5 delivery charge for this service.  Call, text or email with your order and questions.  410-215-6776.

Farm Update

Market Open Saturday and Sunday 9-3

Summer's back!!!  We were worried about our
Fall broccoli, what with all the warmer weather of late.  When broccoli gets to hot during it's growth cycle, it can look beautiful and taste horrible. That's why we seldom plant spring broccoli anymore, it gets so hot so quick in the spring that the broccoli turns real bitter and weird.  The good news is, we tried it this week and it tastes real good!  So you will see the first cuttings this weekend in the market along with:

Red Beets
Yellow Beets
Sweet Potatoes
Green Bell Peppers
Delicata Squash
Butternut Squash
Spring Salad Mix
Arugula
Red Fingerling Potatoes
Yukon Gold Potatoes
Red Potatoes
Carrots
Radishes
Swiss Chard
Spinach
Kale
Onions
Eggs
Honey
Broccoli

Farm update

Market Open Friday 9-7 and Saturday 9-12 noon

Well, when you come down the lane to the market you may hear a sound we haven't heard in a while around these here parts....the crowing of a rooster!  In an attempt to help keep hawks at bay we have been joined by pork chop and basil (pronounced Bah-sil).  They've been together from the time they were chicks.  Saturday their brother, Dill, will join the flock as well.  I thought the girls would be freaked out, but they seem to follow the boys around and are quite friendly with them.  (Wah Wah Wah) All I know is that at the beginning of the week I collected 32 eggs, today I collected 73!  Lot of great items in the market tomorrow and Saturday morning:

Red Beets
Yellow Beets
Sweet Potatoes
Green Bell Peppers
Delicata Squash
Butternut Squash
Spring Salad  Mix
Arugula
Red Fingerling Potatoes
Yukon Gold Potatoes
Red Potatoes
Carrots
Radishes
Swiss Chard
Spinach (limited, just coming in)
Kale
Onions
Eggs
Honey

See you down at the farm!

Farm Update

Market Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday!

Our market will be open Friday (tomorrow) 10-7, Saturday 9-3 and Sunday 10-3.  The new layer chickens have just started laying this week, so we will have a few eggs in the market.  Keep in mind these are what we call starter eggs.  They are small to medium in size as the girls work their way up to their normal jumbos in a couple of weeks.  I've been looking for a couple of roosters to join the girls primarily to help with the air assault from the hawks.  Two roosters and 100 hens.  If there is life after death I would love to come back as a uh um, well anyway, in the market:

Eggs-limited and small
Spring Mix Salad Mix
Arugula
Swiss Chard
Red Potatoes
Yukon Gold Potatoes
Onions
Sweet Corn - a sweet bi-color
Radishes
Curly Kale
Red Russian Kale
Toscano Kale
Red Beets
Carrots
Herbs-Rosemary, Thyme, Sage, Oregano, Parsley
Mint-Mojito, Peppermint, Spearmint, Chocolate, Julep, Lemon
Honey

Hope to see you down on the farm!

Farm Update

Fall Produce Starting and Other Stuff

It may not be much, at the moment, but a few of the fall plantings are ready or getting close.  We have a small amount of arugula ready to go and it's delicious!  The cooler then average temps have helped the bugs stay off the leaves so it looks great too.  If you're looking for arugula today or this weekend stop by and we will go out and cut it while you're here.  It will only take a couple of minutes and it so good cut fresh.  $4 a quarter pound.  Radishes should be ready next week. Lettuce is coming soon as well.  Along with these, we have planted:
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Cabbage
Kale
Carrots
Spinach
Beets
Turnips
Potatoes
Green Beans

We will let you know when these become available.

We have 100 new laying chickens that should start popping out their eggs in 2-3 weeks.

We are helping our honey bees get ready for winter by treating them for Varroa mites.  Mites have become a huge problem for the bees and most hives have them.

So I'm out laying in the field getting ready to take in the eclipse a few days ago.  It was about 2:30ish, face up to the sky, eyes closed tight, quite relaxing really.  Next thing I know, Vicky is near me asking if I was all right!  I totally missed the eclipse, but that two hour nap was AOK.

Free cucumbers!

As we were heading out to start planting our fall crops, we detoured by the cucumbers.  There are a lot of cucumbers in our small cuke area.  We will have them in the market on the counter for you. Just come in and help yourselves.

So, the planting begins this weekend for the autumn.  Going in this weekend are broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage transplants and in the next few days, potatoes, beets, lettuce, arugula, swiss chard, kale, turnips, carrots, radishes, beans and spinach.  We will be going to pick up the new laying chickens in a couple of weeks!  Don't forget we always have honey.

Come over and get a cucumber!

The new farm looks familiar

We're Back!

Yes, it's true.....After an exhaustive search for the next farm, we are exhausted.  We exhausted all the possibilities and found none that we liked better than the current Rousedale Farm.  And now that the exhaust systems on our vehicles are exhausted from the many exhausting trips, here's the plan:
1..We start planting fall veggies in a couple of weeks
2..We get all the coolers, counters and shelves back in the market.
3..New laying chickens arrive in mid August for egg sales.
4..We have re-started our apiary with 2 hives of honey bees, in hopes of adding more.
5..We begin planning the full re-start for spring.
6..We are excited!

Don't forget we have honey for sale everyday.

We're looking forward to getting started again, but most importantly we're psyched to see all of you guys again!

Blueberries

Hi everyone!  As Paul Revere once said,"The blueberries are ready, the blueberries are ready!" Are you interested in picking some beautiful, organic blueberries?   Because we have a limited amount we will have to schedule the picking. Please email us if you would like to do some picking and tell us when you can come.  We will contact you on a first come, first serve basis and set up a time.  Those that can come sooner than later will be first on the list as the berries won't just sit around and wait for you.  Many bushes are ready now.  There should be more in the next couple of weeks.  $5 per pound.

Vicky and Steve
